Looking back on this year, what have been the biggest changes in your practice?

Having to always wear PPE changes how we interact with patients. It’s hard when I cannot see their expressions and they cannot see that I am smiling at them. Since our hospital is not allowing visitors, we have to assure patients’ families over the phone that their loved one is going to be okay, which is more challenging for all concerned.

Tell us about the most inspirational thing you’ve experienced as a nurse during this pandemic.

When this pandemic started, we had little idea what it was or how it spread. Despite these unknowns, the nurses would put on their protective gear and go into a patient’s room without hesitation, putting their lives at risk to help complete strangers. That bravery has been inspirational to see.

Nursing Education

What nonmedical support from family, friends or the general public has been most appreciated?

Lots of local businesses in our area have generously donated many things: cute masks, pet rocks and food from restaurants in the area. Many businesses are also giving preference to healthcare workers.

How have you grown as a nurse since you started working in this profession?

I was previously in construction as a communications installer for buildings. My interactions with people were limited, as we were usually alone in a building. Becoming a nurse has allowed me to interact with people a lot more. I have grown to love people and see them as they are, and I am grateful to provide the care and comfort they need. All people have problems; we are here to make things more comfortable for them and show the love we have for each other.
