Launched in 2004 by Editor & Publisher Catherine Rhodes, Working Nurse is a media platform for registered nurses in California. It encompasses this website, our Friday Newsletter, our vibrant social media groups, as well as the Working Nurse print magazine, which is published nine times a year and distributed via direct mail.
Our specialty is the career of nursing.
We feature inspiring job opportunities from local hospitals, RN recruitment events, and educational programs from top nursing colleges, both on campus and online.
Our lively, practical articles include career advice, news and views on issues important to nurses, and interviews with California RNs who tell us about their career journey.
We profile great moments from nursing history — spotlighting pioneers like Clara Barton, who overcame debilitating shyness and depression to establish Civil War field hospitals and later launched the American Red Cross; and Lillian Wald, a wealthy socialite who pursued nursing against the wishes of her family in the early 1900s and ultimately found her calling in public health.

Nurses are the skilled hands, compassionate heart and sturdy backbone of our entire healthcare system.
During times of crisis, they put themselves on the line for their patients and their communities, but as one young New York ICU nurse said during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, “I’m not a hero — I’m just doing my job.”
Our mission at Working Nurse is to support the nursing community by offering useful resources for all stages of a nurse’s career — whether fresh from the pinning ceremony, considering a mid-career specialty change or aiming for the C-suite.
